New tools in Graphic Design Can Stop an Artist In His Tracks

August 19th, 2010

In the 1950′s acrylic paint was invented- prior to that the most game changing invention was oil paint in the 15th century. This coincided nicely with the discovery that our bodies were not just pretty sacks filled with viscus fluid but an intricate network of pumps filters and pipes of organic matter ( but I digress). The point is the artists of bygone eras had few innovations to deal with and could be left to their own devices to create content. With the invention of the computer, and the proliferation of the web we artists have been forced to toss our brushes and exchange them for an ever changing array of tools. I am talking about the computer, mouse, graphic tablet, scanner and digital camera of course- but more specifically the applications which drive these devices and allow us to create.

Photoshop was released in 1990 and there have been 12 major revisions to the software- rendering the previous version virtually useless. This means that over the last twenty years Photoshop has changed 100 times more often than the fine art of painting, and therefore as artists we have had to integrate this new technology into our work flow 100 times more efficiently that say Leonardo da Vinci. (What’d he come up with, Foreshortening? Pshaw!)

This only takes into account the Photoshop innovations however and we all know that is only the tip of the iceberg. Adobe Master Collection ships with a over 16 similarly innovative programs and there are at least 5 programming languages a graphic artist hoping to work should know- and every year these change as well . My point is that to make a living as a professional artist there is a daunting amount of knowledge that must be accumulated- and most of it has a shelf life of around two years.

This is a dramatic picture, I know- and knowledge builds upon knowledge so we’ve got that going for us- but it is a daunting task to become a well equipped artist these days. The plus side is that there doesn’t seem to be a shortage of work for talented artists and designers. This constant change creates a need for website optimization and new design standards and even if you forgot to get on the Tech boat twenty years ago, you can get on now and you might only be 5 years behind.

What Rhymes with ‘Cover Letter’? ‘Never Better’!

July 12th, 2010

Cover letters are the worst. Writing them is like going on a first date with an invisible woman- who knows what she’s like? What would impress her? I don’t know- but who doesn’t like a humorous couplet or two, eh? Below is the latest attempt I’ve made to break through the hiring manager’s impenetrable forcefield! Enjoy.

Hello and thank you for this resume run-through
I am a Myers Briggs ENFJ.
My name is Paul Williams and I’ll make you millions-
We’ll all laugh about this letter one day.
So grab a chair, hang onto your hair-
And I’ll start my story without delay.

I’ve just returned, though I was not spurned
From the city by the Bay.
While I was there I worked a fair share
But Phili is where I’ll stay.
Here I’m building a life with my soon to be wife
Her name is Kelly J.

I find enjoyment in challenging employment
And found your listing in my RSS reader
Your advertisement gives the advisement
To write my letter in meter.
It also insists on a top ten list
Of my qualifications- they couldn’t be sweeter.

First on the list, I must insist
In Adobe I’m like Derek Jeter
Second, I guess, I do my best
To set an example and be a leader.
Third I have heard that I am a Mac nerd
But I’m not a rumor mill feeder.

I can paint like De Kooning, but prefer cartooning-
And working on my computer all night.
A dynamic teacher- an imagination reacher-
My lectures are super tight.
I like to freelance, when given the chance
I can build you a sweet website. (www.pauljamesWilliams.com)

I’m always on time, for work and for rhyme,
With couplets and iambic pentameter.
I’m never lax, and complete every task
Within every spec and parameter.
I like to work, I’m never a jerk-
My smile’s six inch in diameter.

I’m a self starter, no one works harder
And I’ll bring that to your crew.
My mind is yearning and my hands are burning
To keep learning things that are new.
If you need proof, don’t be aloof,
Call me now for an interview.

My experience in detail is attached to this email,
So download my resume.
If you need to call, just ask for Paul
I’ll be by the phone night and day.
And just so you know, I’m ready to go
When you need me I can start yesterday!

Photo editing

July 2nd, 2010

Jim came to me with this photo about two weeks ago. He wanted to use this photo for work, but there was too much glare. I rose to the challenge, and an hour or two later we have what you see here. The hardest part was that as you see, there wasn’t much “raw material” to work with because the eyes are almost entirely covered with glare. If you would like to do this yourself, I suggest googling photoshop retouching and setting aside three or four hours.

New Blog

July 1st, 2010

Last night I lost all of my old posts, so this will be a fresh start for all of us. This blog will be a place for me to post new works in progress, cartoons, and i might even post a tutorial or two if necessary. Later today I will be posting my resume and the first of what I hope will be daily cartoon contributions.
